Before any work commenced, Rebel Roofing ACT carried out a detailed inspection of the property’s roof drainage system. The inspection focused on gutter alignment, water flow, downpipe capacity, roof runoff patterns and the overall condition of the existing drainage components.

Although the roof structure remained sound, several improvements were identified that would significantly improve the property’s ability to manage rainwater.

Existing Gutter System Reaching the End of Its Service Life

The existing gutters had experienced years of continual exposure to Canberra’s harsh weather conditions. While still functional, sections showed signs of ageing and no longer provided the most efficient drainage performance. Replacing the gutters would improve water flow while providing a longer-lasting solution for the homeowner.

Uneven Water Distribution from the Upper Roof

One of the most significant findings involved rainwater from an upper roof section being discharged directly onto a lower roof surface through an existing downpipe arrangement.

Instead of being spread evenly, the water was concentrated into a single location before entering the lower gutter. During heavy rainfall, this created excessive water flow across one section of roofing and increased the volume of water entering a relatively small area of gutter.

Although no damage had occurred, installing a custom PVC roof spreader would distribute this water more evenly across the roof surface and reduce concentrated runoff.

Patio Gutter Required Realignment

The patio gutter remained structurally sound but required adjustment to improve its fall towards the outlet.

Even minor variations in gutter fall can affect drainage performance, particularly during prolonged rainfall. Repositioning and adjusting the gutter would allow water to move more freely towards the downpipe while reducing the possibility of water sitting within sections of gutter.

Downpipe System Upgrade Recommended

The inspection also identified opportunities to improve how rainwater travelled from the roof to the property’s stormwater system.

Installing new downpipes would provide more reliable drainage while working together with the upgraded gutters to improve overall water management across the entire roof.

Debris Management Improvements

Like many homes throughout Gungahlin, surrounding trees contribute leaves, bark, seed pods and other organic debris throughout the year.

Without protection, these materials gradually accumulate inside gutters, slowing water flow and increasing maintenance requirements.

Installing gutter guards would help minimise debris build-up while allowing rainwater to continue flowing freely through the guttering system.

Opportunity to Improve Overall Roof Drainage

Rather than replacing individual components only where required, the inspection showed that upgrading the complete drainage system would provide the greatest long-term benefit.

By combining new gutters, correctly positioned downpipes, gutter guards, patio gutter adjustments and a custom PVC roof spreader, the home’s roof drainage system would work together more efficiently during both normal rainfall and heavier Canberra storms.
